Is the preventive labelling of gluten confusing?

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

Aims poster 16th International Coeliac Disease Symposium, 21.-24.6.2015 Praha The aim of this study was the gluten determination in foods labelled with various types of precautionary labelling such as „this product may contain gluten or traces of gluten“, “product may contain traces of cereals containing gluten” ,”product made in a plant processes wheat” etc. Methods The foods were selected in collaboration with Czech Celiac Society and purchased in retail network. We analysed 57 foods of various commodities to prove necessity of precautionary statements. The sandwich ELISA kit RIDASCREEN Gliadin R7001 from R-Biopharm was used for analysis. Results In a series of 57 samples, 42 samples was evaluated as negative for gluten. In 9 foods was found the gluten content lower than 20mg/kg, so these samples could be considered as gluten-free. Another sample had gluten content close to the limit of 20mg/kg. A very high gluten content was determined only for five food, therefore, another lot of these products have been analyzed, of which 1 sample was highly positive, one was below 30 mg/kg and the other had gluten content less than 20mg/kg. Conclusion The majority of samples labeled with precautionary statement does not contain gluten over the limit. Only 5 samples were very positive in case of one lot and two samples were positive in case of another lot. It seems, that potential contamination depends on the lot of the product. The allergen labeling will in the future certainly subject of many controversy. The labeling serves as a warnings to the people with allergies, but it limits the choice of food for patients with celiac disease and a wheat protein allergy. Anyway, a caution is necessary in case of consumption of such food.
