Latin or Vernacular? A Historical Sociolinguistic Perspective on Czech Morphosyntactic Terminology during Renaissance Humanism
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
This study examines the Czech morphological and syntactic terminology in the long sixteenth century, when Renaissance Humanism fully emerged in the Czech lands. Focusing on Czech grammars and school Latin textbooks, it investigates the language choices in these texts, their Czech terminology for describing Czech and/or Latin, and its evolution over time. Unlike earlier studies, which frame the history of Czech grammatical terminology as a continuous, teleological progression from medieval origins to modern scientific terminology, this study situates it within the sociocultural and discursive practices of the period. It approaches terminology as being shaped by individual handbook authors, the needs of theirintended users, and the interaction of multiple languages in a multilingual environment. By exploring who created this terminology, for whom, under what conditions, and for what purposes, the analysis shows that it is misleading to regard this vocabulary as the first stage of a Czech specialized grammatical terminology. Rather, it functioned as school terminology - an auxiliary tool designed to support beginners' study of Latin until they could proceed without recourse to their native language. This conclusion is supported by the fact that the use of Czech terms was also avoided in contemporary Czech grammars, probably in order to enhance the prestige of Czech as a language comparable to the classical ones.
