Paraphrasing in Modern Czech Bible Translation

The topic of paraphrasing or &quot;freedom&quot; in Bible translation has not been consistently iscussed in depth so far in the Czech environment. Yet there are two modern translations of the entire New Testament from Greek into English, which their authors call &quot;paraphrased&quot;. One is a text known as Slovo na cestu [The Word for the Journey] (acronym: SNC), developed by an informal Ecumenical group and first published in 1989. The other is a translation by Joseph Kurz, an evangelical Christian, which was published in 2013 (long after the author&apos;s death) but completed as a manuscript in as early as 1980 (i.e. when SNC was in its infancy). The text of the SNC has so far received little scholarly attention. The translation by Josef Kurz is generally almost unknown and no published scholarly study has yet been devoted to it. The article presents the place of both SNC and Kurz in the context of the relatively rich tradition of modern Czech Bible translation, showing the essential features of each of the two versions and providing a basic comparison between them. It was on the basis of comparative analysis that SNC and Kurz proved to be two distinctly different approaches to &quot;paraphrasing&quot; in the translation of Holy Scriptures, which enrich the tradition of the Czech Bible translation in an interesting way and which may, in a number of aspects, inspire future translations (not just &quot;paraphrased&quot; ones) into Czech as well as other structurally related (especially Slavic) languages.
