La representación de los problemas de salud mental en los manuales de español como lengua extranjera

Los problemas de salud mental constituyen uno de los retos a los que se enfrenta la sociedad en la actualidad, especialmente después de la pandemia del coronavirus. Dentro del marco de la Lingüística Aplicada, la enseñanza de lenguas extranjeras tiene la posibilidad de contribuir a la educación para la salud mental y a la alfabetización en salud mental desde una perspectiva interdisciplinaria. Así, este artículo se ocupa de la representación de los problemas de salud mental en los manuales de español como lengua extranjera (ELE). El objetivo es investigar de qué manera contribuyen los manuales de ELE al desarrollo de la alfabetización en salud mental de los aprendientes extranjeros de español. Desde la óptica del Análisis Crítico del Discurso y a través de un método inductivo-deductivo, se analiza una selección de manuales de ELE correspondientes a los niveles B2, C1 y C2 según el MCER, para averiguar qué problemas de salud mental aparecen en estos manuales y cómo se representan en los contenidos lingüísticos y textuales. Los resultados indican que la salud mental y sus problemas tienen una representación explícita, aunque mínima, en los manuales, muy por debajo de la representación que manifiestan la salud física y sus enfermedades. En el análisis se identifican diversos trastornos mentales, como la ansiedad, la depresión o la esquizofrenia, entre otros; sin embargo, sus referencias se hallan de forma esporádica en textos o actividades que no profundizan en el tema de la salud mental. Asimismo, el análisis destaca la falta de contexto cuando se mencionan los problemas de salud mental, así como la escasez de textos que puedan contribuir de una manera significativa a la alfabetización en salud mental; un hecho que no se observa en la temática o el contenido de otros textos que contribuyen a la alfabetización científica o digital de los aprendientes de ELE. A partir del bajo número de alusiones a la salud mental y sus problemas, el carácter esporádico de estas referencias, la escasez de textos dedicados a esta problemática y la falta de contexto para introducir este tema, se llega a la conclusión de que los manuales de ELE analizados construyen una representación parcial y simplista de los problemas de salud mental.

Mental health issues represent one of the global challenges that society has to face nowadays, especially after the coronavirus pandemic. Within the framework of Applied Linguistics, foreign language teaching has the potential to contribute to mental health education and mental health literacy from an interdisciplinary perspective. Thus, this article focuses on the representation of mental health problems in textbooks for learning Spanish as a Foreign Language. The aim is to investigate how Spanish textbooks contribute to the development of mental health literacy among foreign learners of Spanish. From the perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis and using an inductive-deductive methodology, a corpus of Spanish textbooks corresponding to B2, C1 and C2 levels according to the CEFR is analyzed to find out which mental health problems appear in these textbooks and how they are represented in the linguistic and textual contents. The results indicate that mental health and its problems are explicitly, albeit minimally, represented in the textbooks but far below the representation of physical health and its diseases. The analysis identifies various mental disorders, such as anxiety, depression or schizophrenia, among others; however, their references are found sporadically in texts or activities that do not delve deeply into the subject of mental health. In addition, the analysis highlights the lack of context when mental health problems are mentioned, as well as the scarcity of texts that can contribute in a significant way to mental health literacy; a fact that is not observed in the subject or content of other texts that contribute to the scientific or digital literacy of learners of Spanish. According to the low number of allusions to mental health and its problems, the sporadic nature of these references, the scarcity of texts dedicated to this issue and the lack of context to introduce this topic, we conclude that the Spanish textbooks analyzed construct a partial and simplistic representation of mental health problems.
