Characterization of Mentha species and peppermint teas: Correlation between antioxidant properties and electrophoretic fingerprinting
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Genus Mentha involves several species and hundreds of varieties which differ in specific odor and taste, but also in the content of polyphenolic compounds and phenolic acids. In this contribution, 10 different varieties of Mentha plant samples and 20 commercially available peppermint herbal teas were evaluated for polyphenolic compound composition and antioxidant properties and compared. The total polyphenolic content (TPC), the total antioxidant activity (TAA) and capillary zone electrophoretic (CZE) fingerprint were measured. The TPC was determined spectrophotometrically using Folin- Ciocalteu method and TAA was measured using scavenging of ABTS cation radical and DPPH method. CZE with UV detection was used for sample fingerprinting. The main goal ofthe study was to compare the information obtained from the electrophoretic fingerprinting with the spectrometric TPC/TAA analyses and discuss the similarities between commercially prepared herbal mixtures with known Mentha plant samples.
