Apology Strategies Used by Czech University Students in a Discourse Completion Task and an Oral Production Task: A Pilot Study
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
This presentation shows the findings of the pilot investigation. The first aim of the study was to compare two data collection techniques - the open-ended written discourse completion task (DCT) and oral production task (OPT). The second aim was to investigate the use of apology strategies by Czech learners of English. The findings suggest that both of the data collection techniques produce very similar data, as the three main apology strategies used by the respondents were the same: they were statements of remorse, reparation and accounts. The occurrence of other strategies varied and depended on the specific situation. The written DCTs have been shown to be reliable and valid, although they can hardly be equated with speech act data from natural discourse. However, they can inform us about learners’ pragmalinguistic and sociopragmatic knowledge in the same way as OPTs do. What is more, they are not as time consuming as OTPs, and allow for the collection of large amounts of data in a short time.
