Selection of plum donors from the germplasm collection for breeding
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Plum trees (Prunus domestica L.) represent an extensive and highly heterogeneous fruit species with great commercial importance, especially in temperate regions. The species is probably of hybrid origin. The prevailing opinion is that it arose from hybridization between blackthorn (Prunus spinosa L.) and myrobalan (Prunus cerasifera Ehrh.) in the area of Eastern Asia. In Central Europe, the cultivation of this species has a long and rich tradition. Individual plum varieties and genotypes differ greatly in fruit and vegetative characters. In 2021, 1,964 hectares of commercial plum plantations were registered in the Czech Republic. In addition to the commercial sector, plum trees are also popular for extensive cultivation in smaller plantings or gardens mainly for self-supply. Plums are a popular and nutritionally valuable seasonal fruit of late summer and early fall. In addition to direct consumption, they are also widely used for processing in the domestic food and canning industry.
