Effect of single-cell algae and cyanobacteria biomass on the growth and viability of probiotic and lactic acid bacteria
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Medová K., Krausová G., Smolová J., Brányik T., Kronusová O.: Effect of single-cell algae and cyanobacteria biomass on the growth and viability of probiotic and lactic acid bacteria. 14th International Scientific Conference on Probiotics, Prebiotics, Gut Microbiota and Health, IPC 2020, 11.11.2020, virtual conference. A prebiotic effect of microalagae species of Chlorella vulgaris (autothrophic, heterothrophic) and Spirulina maxima was tested in vitro in three bacterial strains; Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis, and yoghurt bacteria Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus.Yogurts containing above mentioned microalgae and bacterial strains were prepared by using milk and whey as a matrix. The prebiotic effect was assayed by plate count method, where viable cell counts were determined in days 0, 14 and 28. In the strain Streptococcus thermophilus, counts and survival rate was not influenced by added microalagae biomass. Instead, a positive prebiotic effect of all microalgae was observed in the strain Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis. Higher counts and viability improvement in milk samples was also noted in the strain Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus. Single-cell algae and cyanobacteria can fulfil a prebiotic function by supporting the growth of probiotics, however, this effect seems to be species-strain specific. One of the most critical parameters is the type of medium and its composition.
