    The work focuses on the isolation of fractions from the biomass of the alga Chlorella vulgaris, their characterization by using infrared spectroscopy. Furthermore, the prebiotic activity of the obtained fractions was evaluated on the basis of the growth of three strains of lactobacilli determined densitometrically and on the basis of the production of lactic and acetic acid in the media with the added fractions. Significant prebiotic activity was shown by the fraction F3, which stimulated the growth of the tested strains the most, and which was confirmed also by the high production of organic acids. This fraction was obtained by washing the algal biomass with organic solvents, followed by hot water extraction and partial enzymatic removal of the proteins. Compared to the other fractions, this fraction contained the highest proportion of polysaccharides. From the spectra measured using infrared spectroscopy, it was made mainly by starch, the main supplying polysaccharide of algae and higher plants. Regarding the metabolic activity of the tested lactobacilli, a higher production of acetic acid was recorded in the media containing algal fractions. Its possible influence on the sensory properties of fermented dairy products containing these algal fractions will need further verifications.
