Environmental effects on learning mathematics are e.g. explained using Brousseau?s concept of didactical contract presented in the 1980s. The interplay of relationships and constraints between the teacher and students may produce certain unwanted effectsand developments that can be observed (e.g. the Topaze effect, the Jourdain effect, metacognitive shift, the improper use of analogy) (Brousseau, 1997). The purpose of this study was to identify the episodes in which Topaze effect was found and classifythe types of Topaze effect and its impact.
