This research study seeks to examine to what extent has Canada's declared policy of reconciliation toward the First Nations been reflected in the country's history textbooks. To this end, fifteen English-language textbooks and two French-language textbooks have been examined for the selection of content, stereotyping, and language. The theoretical part will address changing approaches to historical narratives and some of the existing surveys of history textbooks. The second part will present the author's survey of the textbooks - their choice of historical material, structure, differences and commonalities, language, etc. The goal of this study is to surmise how much progress, if any, has been achieved in deconstructing some of the past stereotypes.
