STEMuJU: Connecting STEM and place-based learning in a extracurricular education programme
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
This paper presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of the STEMuJU extracurricular educational programme, which integrates STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) with place-based learning (PBE). The programme aims to improve students’ engagement and understanding by connecting scientific concepts with real-world contexts and local environments. The theoretical framework combines principles of integrated STEM education, constructivist learning, and PBE, emphasising authentic tasks and community relevance. The study used a design-based research approach, piloting the programme in two Czech primary schools with students aged 10 to 15. The paper describes the concept and development of this programme, as well as the findings of the feedback forms from the participants. Data were collected through questionnaires, observations, and semi-structured interviews with students, teachers, and pre-service teachers. The findings indicate high levels of student participation, perceived relevance in the local context, and positive feedback from teachers on the quality of the organisation and the educational value. Pre-service teachers reported significant professional development benefits. Identified challenges include the need for differentiated tasks and a longer time for final activities. The paper concludes with implications for curriculum integration, teacher education, and future research on the long-term impacts of STEM-PBE programmes
