History and Impact of High-Stakes Tests in the Czech Military
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Although teaching languages in the Czech military has had a long tradition, its content, methodology and assessment differed a lot. Hand in hand with the preparation for joining NATO, the Czech military had to make profound changes in language training to enable the military personnel to be interoperable with other NATO countries. In order to adopt STANAG 6001, STANdardization AGreement, it was essential to launch changes in all components of language training. Firstly, the language teachers had to familiarize with the document itself which contains detailed descriptors of each of five language levels in all four basic language skills. Afterwards, teaching content and methods had to be innovated. To be able to accommodate new teaching practices, the teachers needed to be trained both language and methodology-wise. Up to now, different factors have influenced processes connected with language education. Currently, language education has reached some stability and the stakeholders can focus on the improvement of teaching – testing alignment, as well as on gathering and analysing feedback from all participants of language learning, teaching and assessment. Based on its results, innovations are being suggested and implemented.
