The university management's attitude towards foreign-language teaching in higher education is one of the significant factors influencing the overall activities of the language centres. The paper focuses on the research whose aim was to ascertain the attitudes of deans and directors of study programmes to the teaching of foreign languages in Bachelor's study programmes of Czech technical faculties. In the investigation, a questionnaire was used as a research tool. Its elaboration was based on the conceptof the European Union language policy and of the Czech Republic state language policy at the tertiary level. Based on the statistically processed data, we might claim that the respondents primarily preferred active knowledge of one foreign language withemphasis on English. They agreed with the idea that technical faculties should also provide foreign-language instruction aimed at language for specific purposes as well as general language.
