Transfer of pesticide residues from seeds to oil

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

In the recent years, the popularity of oilseeds for direct consumption has been growing as they contain a wide range of biologically active compounds with beneficial effects on human health. Also, the popularity of cold pressed oils obtained from these seeds is growing up. The yields and quality of the seeds can be lowered by various pests (insects, fungi), mainly during storage. To minimize loses, various pesticides are usually applied to protect storage seeds. The residues left on the seeds surface may be transferred into oil during pressing. The aim of this study was to obtain a comprehensive knowledge on an occurrence of pesticide residues in different types of oilseeds obtained from stone and internet stores in the Czech Republic. For this study, the samples were extracted using QuEChERS method followed by clean-up process (dSPE with PSA). The measurement was performed by GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS, altogether 500 pesticides were screened. 65 % of samples from examined 97 oil seeds contained at least one pesticide residue, 48 % of the contaminated ones were contaminated by two or more residues. The detected pesticides were mostly insecticides. Poppy seeds, sesame seeds and chia seeds were most often contaminated while no residues were found in flax seeds. 28 samples of contaminated oilseeds were chosen because of high content of pesticide residues and oil was cold-pressed from them. The QuOil method was used for extraction and the extracts were measured by both GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS. The process factors were then calculated for pesticides detected in these oils. The highest process factor was calculated for chlorpyrifos-methyl detected in pumpkin seeds and oil pressed from them.
