Josef Valenta se ve svém příspěvku věnuje etickým tématům spojeným s divadelním a obecně i uměleckým výzkumem a nabízí jakousi otevřenou „‚encyklopedii‘ témat etiky výzkumu ‚s divadlem‘“. Jeho psaní připomíná místy až matematický vzorec: rozrůstá se po ploše stránky do bohatě větvených struktur, klasifikuje různé metody výzkumu a všímá si zejména etických otázek a problematických sfér, které přinesl obecný posun od výzkumu pozitivistického k výzkumu kvalitativnímu. Aktéři se v kvalitativním typu zkoumání mohou různě „‚depolarizovat‘, kupř. výzkumník se může stát součástí zkoumané komunity a sám se stává též zdrojem poznání“, a právě tato ztráta plné distance od objektu zkoumání přináší nové etické otazníky. U každého pojmu či problému nabízí autor rozptyl jeho možných konkrétních podob – každou pomyslnou tečku nechává rozpít se do širší plochy. Za klíčový doprovodný prvek herních aktivit v rámci dramatické výchovy považuje autor kontinuální analytické a evaluační reflexe. Odborná kolektivní monografie Divadlo a etika se zabývá vysoce aktuálním tématem etických aspektů divadelní tvorby. Příspěvky vycházejí z kontextu umělecké praxe a reflexe na Divadelní fakultě Akademie múzických umění v Praze (DAMU), zároveň ovšem hranice této instituce překračují a vplétají se do obecnějších a širších souvislostí současného (nejen) českého divadla. Kniha přináší několik příspěvků k situaci na DAMU a dalších (nejen) českých uměleckých vysokých školách, týkajících se iniciativ typu NE!MUSÍŠ TO VYDRŽET a fenoménů, na něž tyto iniciativy poukazují. Některé kapitoly nabízejí vhled do uvažování a práce současných divadelnic a divadelníků a přibližují vnitřní procesy tvorby a způsoby, jimiž autoři o svých typech divadla přemýšlejí. Příspěvky otevírají témata jako např. performativita řeči, zvládání konfliktů, utváření postupů proti násilí, etika práce, podmínky divadelního provozu i divadelního vzdělávání, vyjednávání hranic, sociální umění, dekolonizace scénografie, etika péče, nehierarchická organizace, hodnota práce v kultuře, jiná-než-lidská etika, estetický a etický postoj v umění, participativní umění, etika v dramatické výchově, etika divadelního výzkumu, občanská shromáždění, kolaborativní procesy či odvážná politická imaginace. Kniha zároveň ohledává možnosti, jak formulovat odborný text nikoli pouze jako tok lineárního textu. Témata nejsou prezentována pouze za pomocí abstraktních pojmů, ale jsou v mnoha případech performována samotným psaním. Mnoho témat otevřených v této knize se tak zviditelnilo a pomáhá rozvíjet větší vnímavost vůči fenoménům, jimž dosud nebyla věnována dostatečná pozornost. Kniha hledá možnosti, jak tyto fenomény živě reflektovat a jak skrze psaní a následné společné diskuse kultivovat způsoby, jimiž lze zodpovídat komplexní otázky.

In his contribution, Josef Valenta addresses ethical topics connected with theatre and artistic research in general and offers a sort of open "encyclopedia" of research ethics topics "with theatre". In some places, his writing resembles a mathematical formula: it expands across the surface of the page into richly branched structures, classifies various research methods and pays particular attention to ethical questions and problematic areas brought about by the general shift from positivist research to qualitative research. Actors in a qualitative type of investigation can "depolarize" themselves in different ways, e.g. the researcher can become part of the researched community and himself also becomes a source of knowledge", and it is precisely this loss of full distance from the object of research that brings new ethical questions. For each concept or problem, the author offers a dispersion of its possible concrete forms - he lets each imaginary dot spread into a wider area. The author considers continuous analytical and evaluation reflection to be a key accompanying element of play activities within drama education. Theatre and Ethics focuses on the highly topical issue of the ethical dimension of theatre. The contributions to this collective academic monograph arise from the context of artistic practice and reflection at the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (DAMU), but they also reach beyond the boundaries of this institution to become entangled in the broader and more general contexts of contemporary theatre both in the Czech Republic and beyond. The book presents several contributions relating to the situation at DAMU and other art universities in the Czech Republic and abroad related to initiatives such as NE!MUSÍŠ TO VYDRŽET (YOU DON’T HAVE TO ENDURE IT!) and the phenomena these initiatives draw attention to. Certain chapters offer a perspective on the ideas and work of contemporary theatremakers, exploring in detail their work processes and the ways in which these artists think about the kinds of theatre they make. Contributions explore themes such as the performativity of speech, conflict management, the establishment of measures to prevent violence, the ethics of labour, the conditions of the theatre world and theatre education, the negotiation of boundaries, social art, the decolonisation of scenography, the ethics of care, non-hierarchical organisation, the value of labour in culture, non-human ethics, the aesthetic and ethical position in art, participative art, ethics in drama education, the ethics of theatre research, civic assemblies, collaborative processes, and courageous political imagination. The book also explores the possibilities of conceiving of academic writing as something other than a linear flow of text. Topics are presented not only through the use of abstract terminology; in many cases, they are performed directly by the writing itself. Many of the themes explored in this book are thus made more visible, leading to a greater sensitivity in relation to phenomena that were once mostly ignored. The book searches for ways to reflect upon these living phenomena and how to use writing and the ensuing communal debate to cultivate ways of addressing complex issues.
