Analysis of level crossings from the point of view of the design elements of the roads

The paper deals with the analysis of the design elements of the road at the crossing point of the railway line. For the analysis were selected existing level crossings in the Czech Republic, where problems were found during the traffic. These were mainly problems of repeated disorder road pavement in contact with the construction of the level crossing. In addition, there are problems with the crossing of motor road transport or freight traffic. Particularly in the case of longer vehicles (heavy goods vehicles, public transport vehicles or long-distance transport), occurred there was contact between the vehicle chassis and the level crossing structure. For some level crossings, the vehicle has been get stuck at the level crossing. These level crossings, including the roads, were focused and further analysed in terms of design elements (track alignment and vertical design elements and their mutual combination). This paper describes the results that were found, and highlights the mistakes that were made in the design. It also highlights the importance of a correct proposal for road communication at the crossing point of the railway, particularly for road and rail safety reasons
