El artículo analiza cinco tipos diferentes de textos en los que se manifiesta el contacto entre el espa?ol y el guaraní. Tres son los textos de los diarios paraguayos (dos de los periódicos generales, uno en espa?ol, otro en guaraní, uno de un tabloide en espa?ol), uno es un ejemplo de la lengua hablada, y el último es un ejemplo del purismo guaraní. El artículo se centra en las diferencias en la inserción de elementos espa?oles en los textos de guaraní y viceversa. Su objetivo es la discriminación entre los fenómenos motivados social, cultural y pragmáticamente, y aquellos con motivos estructurales (tipológicos). Register variation in language contact: The case of Guarani and Spanish in Paraguay

The article analyses five different types of texts where Spanish and Guarani languages come into contact. Three are texts from Paraguayan periodicals (two from general newspapers, one in Spanish, one in Guarani, one from a tabloid in Spanish), one is anexample of spoken language, and the last one is an example of purist Guarani. It focuses on differences in the insertion of Spanish elements in Guarani texts and Guarani elements in Spanish texts. It aims at discriminating which differences have social,cultural, and pragmatic causes, and which are caused by structural (typological) differences between the two languages. The differences between different types of texts can be seen as register variation: for example, in Spanish any presence of Guarani items is a feature of informality, while the presence of Spanish items in Guarani is acceptable in formal register in the case of content items, while the functional words are characteristic of more colloquial registers.
