An overview of the history of the languages and literacy in Taiwan from early colonisation until the 19th century. Early colonisation introduced literacy among the Siraya speakers in SW Taiwan. The Dutch colonisers were actively involved in spreading the Christian faith among the traditional population of Taiwan. They translated various religious texts into Siraya and Favorlang, two traditional languages spoken in eastern Taiwan.
