Music videos have always traveled. While the cultural significance and transmedia expansion of music videos cannot be doubted today, their various travels and continual migrations have remained largely overlooked. In order to rethink music videos in their complex transmedia relationships, sociocultural framing, and discursive connections, this introductory chapter proposes the concept of music video traffic. Situated at the intersection of audiovisual studies, cultural analysis, and media theory, this notion invites to examine music videos from within their busy traffic involving their underlying online platforms, political situations, and transmedia movements. To this end, the chapter argues for decentering music videos to open up new avenues for studying them relationally—at the juncture with other media, platforms, political dispositifs, and aesthetic forms. Emerging as highly unstable, transforming, and perpetually migrating cultural objects—traversing various media platforms, engaging with new technologies, interrogating manifold cultural identities—music videos have come to be defined by their very mobility.
