The aim of this paper is to evaluate to what extent coursebooks develop learners' sociolinguistic competence. Coursebooks commonly used at primary and lower secondary schools (Chit Chat, Project) are analysed. The analysis focuses on the presentation andpractice of everyday polite forms and basic routines at the A1 - A2 levels (according to CEFR), such as polite forms of greeting and address, invitations, suggestions, apologies and introductions. Reading and listening texts, grammar and vocabulary exercises and other activities are evaluated. Strengths and weaknesses of each coursebook are identified and areas teachers need to pay special attention to are suggested.
