The Evaluation of Orofacial Praxis as an Important Component of Differential Diagnosis in Symptomatic Speech Disorders – the Example of Moebius Syndrome and Autism Spectrum Disorders

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

Problem statement: The orofacial praxis determines the development of speech as well as primary functions of the orofacial system, with secondary impact not only on chewing and swallowing as alimentary processes, but also complex communication (facial expressions, pragmatics and emotions expressions). The purpose of study: The paper deals with interdisciplinary overlaps and emphasize the need of more sensitive and deepen evaluation and treatment of orofacial praxis within an early intervention of syndromic and autism spectrum disorders. Methods: We used both qualitative (case study) and quantitative (questionnaire) methods. Findings: The research revealed a lack of relevant information and actions needed for interdisciplinary assessment of orofacial praxis deficiencies in two cases of Moebius syndrome (MS). The neglecting the parents concern on the child development together with an insufficient sensibility to communication development while general parameters of growth and weight were monitoring in prior might be the reasons of late and protracted diagnosis. But positively we may perceive the speech and language therapists´ knowledge and attitude to possible assessment and treatment of orofacial praxis impairment or deviations. The importance of specific orofacial therapy treatment is highlighted by the remarkable improvement of child´s with MS development after initiation of complex orofacial and special needs treatment. Conclusions: There is a need to improve the complex assessment and intervention of coincidently highly related to many other syndromic and pervasive developmental disorders syndromes (e.g. autism spectrum disorders, Prader-Willi syndrome etc.). We suggest some possibilities of precising the evaluation of orofacial praxis in relation to these findings.
