Abstract: An important aspect of school curriculum is citizenship education. To allow teachers to prepare well and effectively lead, they must know the preconceptions and attitudes of students. The present study was compiled using a questionnaire to map the attitudes of adolescents toward citizenship and the changes they wish to have in civic behavior. Obtaining a broad set of data on attitudes of adolescents allows teachers to address the issue of citizenship. The results of this study indicate that Slovak adolescents believe citizens are significantly more active than Czech adolescents, tolerance for strangers and different cultures is important, applying the constitutional rights of the citizen is essential and traditional roles and social standards deserve attention. The Czech respondents expressed a greater desire for changes than respondents from Slovakia with mitigating factors such as patriotism and confidence in state institutions.
