Le chapitre Mère et grand-mère : la féminité dans les œuvres de Dany Laferrière se veut une analyse de la féminité familiale, notamment la mère et la grand-mère, dans les œuvres littéraires de Dany Laferrière. Tandis que la femme en tant qu’objet érotique est souvent présenté dans ses textes de façon ludique, l’image de la mère ainsi que celle de la grand-mère ont une valeur grave et iconique. L’archétype de la mère sous forme de mater dolorosa se déploie dans les romans dont l’action se passe en Haïti, le pays d’origine de Laferrière. La figure de la mère dans sa solitude symbolise effectivement l’île qu’elle n’a jamais quittée, son histoire coloniale malheureuse et le destin de tous ses habitants qui souffrent de la pauvreté et de la décadence de la société haïtienne. L’image de la grand-mère dans les textes laferrièriens apparaît répétitivement comme une sorte d’incantation et son rôle semble contraster à celui de la mère : une évocation du paysage ensoleillé de l’enfance, un centre de sécurité et un abri devant les tempêtes de la vie de l’auteur et ses narrateurs. Dans les intentions des Structures anthropologiques de l’imaginaire de Gilbert Durand on peut considérer la mère comme une figure du régime nocturne tandis que la grand-mère, par son caractère positif et optimiste, serait un élément du régime diurne, les deux attachées cependant par des liens familiaux et générationnels.

The chapter Mother and Grandmother: feminity in the works by Dany Laferrière is intended to be an analysis of family feminity, particularly mother and grandmother, in the literary works of Dany Laferrière. While the woman as an erotic object is often presented in his texts in a playful manner, the image of the mother as well as that of the grandmother have a serious and iconic value. The archetype of the mother in the form of “mater dolorosa” is deployed in novels set in Haiti, Laferrière’s country of origin. The figure of the mother in her solitude effectively symbolizes the island that she never left, its unfortunate colonial history and the destiny of all its inhabitants who suffer from the poverty and decadence of Haitian society. The image of the grandmother in Laferrièrian texts appears repeatedly as an incantation and her role seems to contrast with that of the mother: an evocation of the sunny landscape of childhood, a center of security and shelter from the life’s storms of the author and his narrators. In the intentions of Gilbert Durand’s Anthropological Structures of the Imagination we can consider the mother as a figure of the nocturnal regime while the grandmother, thanks to her positive and optimistic character, would be an element of the diurnal regime, the two, however, attached by family and generational ties.
