Social Exclusion and the Construction of the Other at a Czech Basic School: An Anthropological Perspective
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
This chapter explores interethnic relations at a Czech basic school, whose pupil population is heterogeneous in terms of ethnicity and class. Special attention is paid to Roma pupils and the boundary constructions in the groups of children from an anthropological perspective and interactionism. The purpose of this chapter is to examine social distance dynamics in peer relations in educational settings. The chapter is based on desk research and ethnographic observation. Research findings derive from fieldwork conducted at the school located near a socially excluded locality in the Czech Republic. Analysis of gained ethnographic data is undertaken in an inductive approach. The results of ethnographic research show the role that ethnicity and socioeconomic status play in the group of children in the classroom environment. This research also draws attention to the teacher’s role of construction of the other. The research findings shed light on many aspects of the social exclusion process in educational settings and offer new insight into the limits of the school suc-cess of Roma children. Furthermore, the article implicitly points out the factors that influence inequalities in education.
