The opening text of the volume “Scholarly Correspondence and Multilingual Practices between the Republic of Letters and the Beginnings of Modern National Society” summarizes recent research on linguistic strategies and the multifaceted communication practices of European scholars from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century, particularly in the context of the interaction between digital approaches and traditional close-reading methods. Particular attention is devoted to the role of multilingualism within the Republic of Letters, which connected learned individuals across Europe, and to the gradual shift from the universalism of Latin to the vernacular languages accompanying the rise of modern society. The text further summarizes the findings of the contributions included in the volume, focusing on the linguistic practices of figures such as Izaiáš Camillus Vodňanský, Amandus Polanus of Polansdorf, Athanasius Kircher, Balthasar Meisner, Jan Marek Marci, Bohumír Jan Dlabač, and, from a later period, Eduard Hanslick. In addition to philological and historical analyses, the volume offers methodological reflections on digital approaches to scholarly correspondence and provides an interdisciplinary perspective combining history, linguistics, and cultural studies. The publication thus contributes to a deeper understanding of the relationship between language choice, identity, and cultural transformation in early modern and modern Europe.
