Becoming a Czech literature translator in Poland: trust-based approach

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

The paper presents ongoing research into the starting moments of translators’ careers, specifically Polish translators of Czech literature. Exploring the concept of trust (Rizzi et al. 2019), it concentrates on understanding the beginning of translators’ professional trajectories, namely how to trust towards people who have not yet published a single translated book is established. The research is based on semi-structured interviews with Czech literature translators in Poland who debuted between 1975 and 2017, thus it covers years of substantial changes in the political and economic system in Poland (and in Czechoslovakia). In the paper, preliminary results are presented, exposing nuances within particular time periods, as e.g., the position of poetry translators has been different (and under capitalism, has changed differently) then the position of prose translators. The same can be said about children literature translators versus “adult literature” translators. Therefore, the aim is to capture diverse factors that influence the trustworthiness of different groups of mediators with historical sensitivity.
