Pilot adits are excavated prior to constructing tunnels with the aim of gathering geotechnical data relevant to the design for the future tunnel construction. Taking into consideration the increased project costs and extended construction time of the tunnelling projects comprising pilot adits, it is necessary to discuss the issue of the benefit and suitability of these galleries for the construction of the tunnels. The following paper brings a summary of pilot adits realised for road and railway tunnelsdriven by the NATM within the 1990 - 2011 period in the Czech Republic.
